![]() ![]() Ruby begins to accept and settle into her new life. As the novel progresses, they grow closer together. Nate Cross, a fellow high school senior who lives next door, covers for Ruby. She tries to run away after learning that she will have to transfer to a new high school, but she’s discovered and stopped. She wears the key to her former home on a chain around her neck. Ruby’s not happy with this arrangement and finds it difficult to trust anyone. Jamie grew up in a close family and wants to share that type of life with Cora and Ruby. When Ruby’s mother abandons her, child services forces Ruby to live with Cora and her husband, dot-com millionaire Jamie Hunter. Lock and Key tells the story of seventeen-year-old Ruby Cooper, her alcohol- and drug-addicted mother, and Ruby’s sister, Cora, who left for college early in Ruby’s life. Dessen frequently explores themes like changing personalities, emotional unavailability, and isolation. She is a repeat winner of the Margaret A. One was extremely well funded, the other runs on the passion of grieving students. Both are subverting traditional power structures to gain their own power and influence. ![]() These two initiatives are more alike than they are different. With few resources and without attachment to any organization, they have generated mass protests and brought millions of voices to bear on legislators and others whose decisions profoundly affect the availability of guns. And yet, just as the public learned about Cambridge Analytica, a group of high school students from Parkland, Florida, captured the civic conversation on preventing gun violence. It can seem insurmountable to drive change in an environment shaped by resources beyond the reach of anyone working to change the status quo. As details emerged this spring about Cambridge Analytica’s mining of Facebook data to help manipulate elections around the world, it was easy to succumb to a feeling of powerlessness. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Professor Damian Tyler has been awarded an Honorary Skou Professorship in recognition of his collaborative work with the MR Research Centre at the University of Aarhus in Denmark. Une autre superbe entrée dans cette série: superbement illustré et superbement écrit, c'est vraiment incroyable. So yeah, as soon as I can find physical copies (which appears to be almost impossible), I'll add these to my shelf. But that is a matter of personal taste and the art was still gorgeous and the vibrant colours a delight to look at. ![]() ![]() The art, once again, was rather wonderful - though I was surprised to see that it wasn't always as staggeringly wonderful as in the first book:Įspecially the depiction of Hera was better in book 1 in my opinion. I loved how this one not only addressed women's plight but also the problem of heritage and how being of this or that gender doesn't necessarily mean you're a good or bad person. But with their evergrowing numbers and human nature being what it is, trouble follows not far behind and what Hera foresaw in the previous book comes to pass (or the opening act at least). (Pretty cool right?… easy to kill the Gorm right?) Wrong! Because Starclaw can cut through anything except iron. Starclaw, the magic dagger, can cut through anything. The Gorm, if you don’t know already, used to be an old rabbit tale for sending bunnies to sleep but actually they came to your warren and killed everyone and took everything. Scramashank is King of the Gorm, a group of rodents covered from head to toe in iron armour (poisonous to the Goddess) and wearing a belt of skulls.
